Freedom

Introduction

Martin Luther King is remembered for advancing the cause of civil freedom and justice in 1950s and 60s America. Key to his success was the insight that human freedom stems, ultimately, from freedom of mind.

His thoughts on the subject are everywhere in what he said, as with these quotes:
- "People fail to get along because they fear each other"
- "Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it"

King's abiding message was that freedom comes from our generosity, especially when it comes to giving the gifts of truth, courage and love - these being the gifts that disarm our opponents while empowering and inspiring the truly human in all of us.

Know Thy Enemy, Know Thy Friend

We'll make no progress, ultimately, if we neglect to topple "tyrants in our head" like fear and anger.

Each of these "stress forces" warp our sense of reality by filling our head with a whole lot of nonsense about the world. Fear, for example, paints us as weaklings stranded in a world that's so full of danger we have to hide ourselves away. The result is that we can feel more and more distanced and alienated from reality, and even from ourselves.

As regards angerMartin Luther King had this to say; "Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

This website shares King's perspective that the most fundamental freedom comes from creative attributes such as love and joy.

These make up our realest "essence", and prosper naturally within us just so long as we stay free from "stress forces" like fear.

When fear etc. take over, they shove our heart aside, along with our imagination, joy, love and true aliveness. Our mind is gripped by extreme “weather”.

Be Real; Be Free

The argument of this website - and of the accompanying book - is that our true realness comes from creative attributes like love, joy, imagination etc..

The freedom to be our real self involves the freedom from fear etc. - and the freedom brought to us by joy and love etc..

How stress can rob us of our real self and freedom - and how we can outlast stress and return to our true self - is outlined in this website in a "cartoon story".

Four Steps To Freedom

If our freedoms hinge on recovering our authority over the likes of fear, how do we go about that?

How do we isolate the fear etc. in our head, and return to being sovereign in our own mind and self?
