Besides distress states related to fear, many other conditions can be bound up with stress. Mood-crushing, demotivating gloom, for example, can exacerbate depression (see p48); addiction can be fed by the - compulsive - desire for given “must-have objects”; and anger can underpin aggression and violence (see p67). These conditions can of course have multiple causes, and warrant proper medical assessment. But a central part is often played by stress: by its impact on our peace and presence of mind; and by its “lies” (see p40-43 and p100 & 112).
